ECMO ACADEMY is the place to improve and advance your ECMO knowledge through interactive simulated cases. Questions about ECMO Indications? Need a better understanding of ECMO patient management? Want to learn more about circuit troubleshooting? Frustrated with anticoagulation management and bleeding? Looking for exercises in clinical decision making? You’ve come to the right place!!

ECMO Academy is a web-based educational program primarily designed using institutional enrollment to provide their ECMO teams with increased knowledge, understanding, expanded skill sets and increased effectiveness. The clinical cases and scenarios are designed for all ECMO team members including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, perfusionists, nurses, respiratory therapists and other involved caregivers. They may be incorporated into an ECMO training course, provide periodic continuing education, or simply be used as practice and review for new or established team members. ECMO Academy Curriculum & Departments

  • “Short Reads” to define and discuss the basic principles of ECMO support, designed for the student with little to no previous ECMO exposure.

  • Real life ECMO SCENARIOS provide opportunities for individual or small group problem solving in ECMO patient and circuit management and troubleshooting.

  • Real cases are presented for review and consideration for eligibility and appropriateness of ECMO support as Simulated ECMO Consults. Good for individual study, but best for team review and discussion.

  • Explore real patient cases and encounter complex ethical issues encountered in the practice of ECMO with real life cases and circumstances. Ideal for team group participation, discussion and debate, with closing commentaries from experts in the field of ECMO and ethics.

  • Detailed discussions of complex and difficult areas of ECMO physiology, physics, and patient and circuit management.

  • The Student Union has the Academy Bulletin Board with announcements, additions, etc. Also houses: The Academy Career Center with job postings and positions sought; The Debate Club Pro/Con Discussions.

  • Home for ECMO resources including Literature References, Literature, Charts, Diagrams, Images and Illustrations.

  • Ad Hoc Videos of interest

  • The Douglas House is the home of the Faculty Center and the Registrar’s Office.

    The Faculty Center has the Academy Faculty profiles, disclosures, and conflict of interest statements, as well as contact information.

    The Registrar’s Office has printable Case Checklists, CME information and instructions, and other administrative information.

  • Where to seek assistance and guidance when things are not going as planned. Issues with program structure, concerning outcomes, individual difficult case or complication reviews or just help getting the team on the same page. The Academy can help.
